Day 1. Arrival day
- General Information:
Our team will meet you in the rural settlement of Khatanga.
Khatanga is located in the eastern part of the Taimyr Peninsula at the 72nd parallel. Here time stops. You have a chance to throw away all the superfluous and feel like a real discoverer!
Arrival day is the day of preparation for the expedition. After check-in at the Mamont Inn (https://mamontinn.ru/) you will have a delicious northern lunch, get acquainted with the team and receive a safety briefing (SAFETY IS EVERYTHING). You will be told how to behave in the tundra, what to do if a polar bear tries to attack you, how to behave with a musk ox. After that we present you with a light excursion around the settlement.
Day 2. Journey to the day when the Earth stopped
35 million years ago, a huge meteorite about 8 kilometers long fell on our planet. Once the lush forests of Taymyr were covered with earth, the land created an oxygen-free space that preserved for us the remains of saga trees and animal bones (Our friend Vitaly Gorshkov found here the jaw of a huge mammoth). We will try ourselves as paleo-researchers.
Stop 1.
The Pestrye Rocks tract is a natural monument of regional significance. The fallen meteorite mixed rocks at different depths, hence the richness of the rocks’ colors: green, yellow, blue, red, black, brown. The maximum depth of color of the rocks appears at dawn and dusk.
Here we will spend 1.5 hours. We will learn more about the history of the Popigay meteorite fall, look for impact bombs and find spirit stones (stones formed naturally but with a special pattern resembling people or animals) for good luck.
Stop 2.
While we walk along the banks of the Rassocha River in search of petrified trees and sago palm fruits, our cook will prepare a delicious lunch. Having gained strength and impressions, we will go to the ghost village — Old Popigai. Here you will see a gravimetric point, protected in the USSR, what it is and for what purpose, we will learn on the spot.
Stop 3.
Novy Popigai settlement is a corner untouched by civilization. Here, on the bank of the picturesque Popigai River, you will be immersed in the Taimyr ethnics. Local residents will assemble especially for you a guest tent, prepare a concert and a fair of traditional handicrafts. You will learn how to make reindeer skin, make fire with a stick, immerse yourself in the life of a reindeer herder. You will also be treated to delicious popigai dishes.
After our overnight stay in Popigai we will head to Khatanga.
Day 3. Road to the North
We will fly to the fourth largest lake in Russia — Lake Taimyr. Here, on the shore of the blue cold lake, we will have a snack and get acquainted with the history of revival of the musk ox population in Taimyr and the history of the northernmost mountains in Eurasia — the Byrranga Mountains.
Stop 1.
Abandoned Bikada bull reintroduction station.
We will be looking for clusters of amazing animals — musk oxen. These «bulls» usually live in small herds, sometimes you can see loners leaving the herd, usually they are old individuals.
While we explore the station and look for musk oxen, our cook will prepare lunch.
After lunch we will head further north to Lake Taymyr.
Stop 2.
Stops for a photo hunt for musk oxen.
We’ll spend the night at the Yukoyama base.
Day 4. In search of the Laptev walrus and the Master of the North
Early in the morning we will go on a photo hunt. Our goal is to find rookeries of Laptev walruses and polar bears. We remember the safety rules, obey the guide and go ahead! The best views are waiting for you!
Our main stop is the Tatiana (Maria) Pronchischeva Bay, where the largest cluster of Laptev walruses is located near the abandoned polar station.
Our guide will also tell about the exploration of Taymyr and the love story of Tatiana and Vasily Pronchishchev.
After the photo hunt, we will return to our base.
The next stop will be in Khatanga. We are waiting for check-in at the hotel and rest.
Day 5. Fishing
A relaxing day at the base awaits us. Rest from flights, catch-and-release fishing and a gastroset of Taimyr products.
Day 6. Reserve. Khatanga.
Early in the morning we will fly to Khatanga.
Having a little rest after a busy journey, we will visit the mammoth museum in permafrost, walk around the settlement.
Day 7. Reserve.
Having slept after busy days of traveling in the distant Taimyr, we will head out to observe the water migration of reindeer on the Khatanga River.
We’ll spend the evening welcoming the sunset of the polar day by the fire.
